Pakistani Silk Ikat Kantha Quilt, Late 19th C. This remarkable piece seamlessly blends two distinct fabrics. The first fabric boasts vibrant red, green, and gold weft ikat stripes set against alternating yellow and brown grounds. In contrast, the backing presents a more subdued floral print. The term 'kantha,' derived from Sanskrit, translates to 'rags,' reflecting the method of creating kanthas by layering discarded and recycled cloth and utilizing threads from rags. Kantha, one of the oldest forms of embroidery in India, can be traced back to the pre-Vedic ages. Often the handiwork of rural housewives in Bengal, it involves simple stitching techniques to craft quilts, saris, dhotis, handkerchiefs, and other textiles for their families. The stitches not only serve the practical purpose of quilting but also function as decorative elements.
