Description
Japanese Buddhist Priest's Silk Mantle (Kesa), 18th/19th C. Silk and paper brocade (kinran): Originally developed out of necessity, poor Buddhist monks utilized old remnants of material cut into squares and joined to form a panel with a new pattern. Over time, these pieces evolved into splendid and opulent creations. Worn draped over the left shoulder, these garments were used to distinguish the followers of Buddha. Size: 6'8'' x 3'10'' (203 x 117 cm). Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
