Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Dine (Navajo), ca. mid-20th century CE. A colorful hand-woven eye dazzler wool rug with rows of stepped diamond patterns that are aniline dyed in red, orange, black, brown, and white. The weave is thick and slightly coarse for use as a rug or wall hanging. In Dine weaving tradition the deity, Spider Woman, taught the ancestral people to weave using a fantastical loom and materials made from the earth, lightning, and sky. Cotton was their main material for hundreds of years before the Spaniards' introduction of sheep. Size: 49" L x 28" W (124.5 cm x 71.1 cm)
