Frederick Ballard Williams (American, 1871-1956), Dreamland

oil on canvas, signed at lower right, presented in the original gilt and gesso frame, retaining a hand-written gallery label to the verso.
Stretcher size 16 x 24 in.; Frame dimensions 22 x 30 in.
Born in Brooklyn, Frederick Ballard Williams studied at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design and The Arts Students League of New York. He is best known for his romantic and decorative works influenced by the French rococo painting of Antoine Watteau.

In 1910, Williams traveled west with the painters Thomas Moran, Elliott Daingerfield, Douglas Parshall and Edward Henry Potthast. In the 1930s, he spent time painting in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Williams exhibited widely and his paintings are in numerous prominent public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Hickory Museum of Art, North Carolina.
