Japanese Lithograph Print, pre-WWII c.1930s
SIZE IN INCHES: 8.675 x 11 inches
COMMENTS: Printed on thick Japanese paper, tipped on the right side to the backing
KOBAYASHI MANGO (1870-1947) initially studied under Ando Nakataro and Harada Naojiro, and later entered the Tenshin Dojo and became the pupil of Kuroda Seiki. In 1896, with the establishment of the course of Western painting at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, he enrolled in the School and also participated in the founding of the Hakubakai (White Horse Society). Graduating School in 1898, he became associate professor of the School in 1904 and, after studying abroad in Germany, France, and Italy from 1911, was appointed professor upon his return. His work is held in many museums including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; The Kagawa Museum; The National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian, Washington DC; and Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya among others.
