John C. Fremont (1813-1890) was an American explorer, military officer, and politician. In 1856, Fremont became the first presidential candidate of the new Republican Party. The Republicans, formed in 1854, were united in their opposition to the current Pierce Administration and the spread of slavery into the West. The election of 1856 was lost to Democrat James Buchanan, however, when the vote was split by the Know Nothing Party.
