Kerouac's Personal Spanish Language Book "El Español Al Día", Book One
Jack Kerouac's personal copy of "El Español Al Día: Book One", by Laurel Herbert Turk and Edith Marion Allen. Boston: D.C. Heath and Co., 1949. Octavo, xx, 311pp, including a Vocabulary section and an Index. Black and white photographs throughout. A lined sheet of paper was found within the pages with handwritten Spanish words - likely a practice sheet. Done in an unknown hand, possibly a family member or friend of Kerouac? The book has stamps on the front pastedown and free end page from the Town of Kingston, Massachusetts, and the Silver Lake Regional School District. Stamped on the front free end page with both a Jack Kerouac Estate stamp and the raised blind seal from the Executor of the Estate, John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife. With another raised blind seal stamp on the half-title page. Black, pictorial cloth bound covers. Rubbing, wear, and soiling to the covers. Dampstaining and some warping to the first few pages, with red ink stains from the dampstaining. Cocked binding but soundly bound. Minor toning and soiling to the internal pages.
