Fulgencio Batista Signs a Rare Document; an Award in the Name of Jose Marti
The document is an award regarding the literary aid organized by the Province of Havana in commemoration of Jose Marti (1853-1895), a Cuban revolutionary leader who was killed in the fight for independence from Spain. The untranslated document has been signed and sealed by Fulgencio Batista (1901-1973) at lower right as President of Cuba. Folio, measuring 13.75" x 10.25". Light age toning and foxing, else very good condition.
Fulgencio Batista was a Cuban military officer and politician who served as the elected president of Cuba from 1940 to 1944 and as a military dictator from 1952 to 1959, until he was overthrown in the Cuban Revolution. A laborer's son, he rose from sergeant-major to colonel in the military coup against President Gerardo Machado in 1933 and was later elected President himself in 1940. He stepped down in 1944 but returned to power following another military revolt in 1952 which overthrew Carlos Prío. This regime was marked by oppression and corruption, which led to his own demise at the hands of Fidel Castro in 1959.
