Afr. American Depicted in Brady Photo from "Incidents of the War"
An image from Mathew Brady's "Incidents of the War" series. Arlington Heights, Virginia, dated 1861. Captioned "Camp McDowell, 8th Reg't N.Y.S.M." A large group of men is photographed standing and seated in front of a tent in camp. At the far left is a young black man, seated on the ground, holding a broom. "8" visible on hat of man seated on ground in front of tent just left of center. The sign on the tent front reads "Engineer." The image, measuring 14.5" x 10.75", has been mounted on thick stock, measuring 17.5" x 14", and has "Mrs. John Wilson, Affectionate regards, David W. Wilson" written in pencil on the lower right side of the mount. Toned throughout, with darker toning at the edges. Moderate foxing to the mat. With tears and light chipping to the mat edges. Overall good.
The 8th New York State Militia, known as "The Washington Greys" was mustered in New York City on April 23, 1861 under the command of Colonel George Lyons. After being stationed briefly in Baltimore, it was assigned duty at General Irvin McDowell's HQ on Arlington Heights until 1st Bull Run, where the regiment suffered 8 killed, 17 wounded, and 13 captured. The unit did not last long and was mustered out on July 24, 1861.
