Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A teak wood sheath purportedly used for storing a large knife blade with a decorative visage that somewhat resembles a Pentul mask, minus the lower jaw. The surface has nice remains of blue pigment, and the sides are pierced for securing to a belt- the verso is flat to lie flush against the wearer's body, and part of an iron fitting is nailed to the rim, protecting the wood from accidental damage while sliding the blade into the sheath. Large bladed knifes / short swords that were used for protection, prestige, and tools were often worn in decorative sheaths. Size: 5.5" L x 5.5" W (14 cm x 14 cm)

Condition
Stable pressure fissures and abrasions. Losses to iron rim fitting. Old losses to wood. Surface has a nice patina and smooth, lustrous areas and has nice remains of blue pigment.
