Bust of, and encircled by "James A. Garfield 1881 President of the United States"."C.E. Barber" (Chief Engraver at US Mint in 1880).

President James A. Garfield Bronze Oval Indian Peace Medal
(1881) President James A. Garfield Indian Peace Medal, Bronze Oval Medal This type is very popular because of the oval shape and the fact that Garfield was assassinated, thereby adding an air of scarcity. Originals of this type were very rare, so the U.S. Mint struck additional pieces in later years to satisfy collector demand. Though dated 1881, the Garfield Indian Peace medals were not completed until 1882 and they continued to be distributed to Indian Chiefs until 1884. Garfield Indian Peace Medal, Bronze Oval Medal This type is very popular because of the oval shape and the fact that Garfield was assassinated, thereby adding an air of scarcity. Originals of this type were very rare, so the U.S. Mint struck additional pieces in later years to satisfy collector demand. Though dated 1881, the Garfield Indian Peace medals were not completed until 1882 and they continued to be distributed to Indian Chiefs until 1884. According to Julian, "
