Description
**Originally Listed At $800**
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kusu peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An impressive, hand-carved wood figure in the form of a standing male. The sturdy figure stands atop stocky legs as his arms fall from his square shoulders, resting to the sides of his slender, elongated torso and his hands lay on his wide hips. Supported by a broad neck, his huge, triangular head presents a minimalist visage, comprised of sizeable, almond-shaped eyes, a flared nose, and a straight mouth, all flanked by a petite pair of unarticulated, high-set ears and capped with a flat coiffure. Skillfully sculpted zigzag peripheries adorn his cheeks, perhaps intended to represent a beard. Note the artist's careful attention to detail, as evident in the figure's incised fingers and toes, gently risen pectoral muscles, and delineated genitalia. Size: 5.2" W x 15.5" H (13.2 cm x 39.4 cm); 17.3" H (43.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection
