Description
**Originally Listed At $250**
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE; Chancay culture, ca. 1300 to 1450 CE. A wonderful ensemble of 6 hand-woven textile fragments that show off several methods of Andean weaving. Three panels, including the largest, are loosely woven cotton compositions in a gauze-like style- each a solid hue of walnut brown, pale pink, and gray-white. This fine mesh-like interlocking shows high artistry and skill, and this cloth was often used in Chancay burials. The next 2 brown fragments are a tighter weave, perhaps camelid (alpaca, or llama) fibers interlaced with tan hues. The last piece boasts horizontal band of color in blue, beige, and brown- and this panel is the most tightly woven, perhaps a garment at one time. These textiles probably were used as burial offerings or wrappings for the recently-deceased. All pieces are displayed in modern glass and wood frame. Size of largest textile piece: 19" L x 6.75" W (48.3 cm x 17.1 cm); frame: 21" L x 17" W (53.3 cm x 43.2 cm)
Provenance: private Thousand Oaks, California collection, USA, before 2000
