Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (Tumaco) to Manteno culture, ca. 600 BCE to 15th century CE. A collection of 3 pottery cylinder roller stamps and a single spindle whorl, 4 items total. The roller stamps are deeply engraved with geometric motifs or glyphs around the face and a perforation through the center - likely for attaching a stick handle when in use. The patterns could be rolled onto a surface using ink or liquid pigments to create a continuous pattern. The pottery whorl once fit onto a spindle to maintain or at times increase the speed of the spinning. In addition to this utilitarian purpose, they could be quite aesthetically pleasing and worn like beads. Size of largest roller: 2.25" L x 1" W (5.7 cm x 2.5 cm)
