His iconic large-scale paintings and prints of looping, gestural marks were scribbled and smeared on raw canvas or linen, infusing his work with a unique level of frenetic energy that remains unmatched. Twombly s practice balanced his interest in Roman and Greek mythology with the childlike doodling of unsophisticated graffiti, blackboard chalk drawings, and bathroom tagging.
