Was one of the leading founders of Impressionism. A French painter and sculptor, he is celebrated for his lively depictions of Parisian urban life and his investigations of color, light, and composition in various media. Best known for his images of dances informed by his firsthand observation and sketches at the Paris Opera, Degas work is characterized by the artists deft hand and boldly asymmetric compositions. He was born on July 19, 1834 in Paris, France and studied at the cole des Beaux-Arts, initially pursuing classical techniques with the intention of being a historical painter. His innovate and bold Steeplechase The Fallen Jockey (1866) marked a turning point towards a more contemporary aesthetic. Following the end of the Franco-Prussian War, the artist traveled to the United States where he painted one of most famous images, A Cotton Office in New Orleans (1875), notably becoming the first Impressionist work to be purchased by a museum a significant acknowledgment of the growing influence of the movement. In the 1870s, Degas experienced a profound period of creativity and worked prolifically despite the fact that, by the mid-1880s, his eyesight began to fail, and increasingly used pastel to create blurred edges and softer forms. He died on September 27, 1917 in Paris, France.
