Description

SUITLAND, MARYLAND STENCILED ADVERTISING STONEWARE WHISKEY JUG, Albany-slip glazed, beehive form with slightly flaring mouth and applied strap handle with medial ridge. Stenciled "S.T. SUIT. / SUITLAND. MD. / LITTLE BROWN JUG. / THE WHISKEY IN THIS JUG / WAS MADE 1869 / AND JUGGED BY ME / 1880." to front. Samuel T. Suit (1832-1888), Suitland, MD. Dated 1880. 7" HOA.
Catalogue Note: Samuel Taylor Suit was born in Bladensburg, MD in 1832. He left home at the age of 14, traveling first to Iowa but eventually settled in Louisville, KY. It was here that he became involved in distilling whiskey. Suit had considerable success in the whiskey business, so much so that he was made an honorary Kentucky colonel. In 1867, Suit made the decision to move back to his home state of Maryland. Settling on a large estate outside of Washington, DC, the area eventually became known as Suitland. Ever the entrepreneur, Suit established a new whiskey distillery, invested in railroads, and even served as a Maryland senator (1873-1877). After fire destroyed the Suit mansion in 1876, he eventually would construct a unique architectural "cottage" located in Berkeley Springs, WV. Known as "Berkeley Castle", the structure was built from local stone and features turrets with crenelated battlements. Today, the home is on the National Register of Historic Places. Suit passed away in 1888 and is buried in St. Barnabas Cemetery, Temple Hills, MD.
