Description
Stepan Fedorovich Alexandrovsky, Russian, 1842 to 1906, a watercolor on paper painting The Imperial Yacht Derzhava. Signed lower left. Housed in a gilt wood and gesso frame. The Derzhava was a royal yacht of the House of Romanov. It was laid down in 1866 and launched in 1871. The Derzhava and the Livadia were the last wooden paddle steamers built for the Romanovs. The Derzhava served the Romanovs until 1898 when she was converted into a training ship and renamed Dvina. Note: The Russian painter, Stepan Fedorovich Alexandrovsky, was born in Riga in 1843. In the 1860s he began to study at the Academy of St. Petersburg. In 1874 he was appointed as an academic for watercolor painting and became a free member of honor at the Academy in 1884. He was one of the founding members of the Society of Russian Watercolorists in 1880 and further practiced as a teacher at the academy since 1868.
