Description
"Washington on Dorchester Heights", after the original which hangs in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, another copy hangs in Fanieul Hall, a second in Mechanic's Hall in Worcester, MA. Apparently the Horse's Ass was a comment by Stuart of Washington's fellow officers, excluding Henry Knox, of course, who dragged the cannons down from Fort Ticonderoga, NY to the hills above Boston, forcing the British to flee their occupation (in the long boats shown behind GW), an event now commemorated as "Evacuation Day". This version is oil on canvas, unsigned, housed in a heavy gold molded cove frame, OS: 59" x 43" SS: 51" x 35"Stencil verso reads "Goupil & Co., Artist's Colourmen, Print Sellers, 386 Broadway, New York", in an oval format, which dates to 1854-1858 shop location.
