An all-bronze cannon manufactured by C.C. Galbraith & Son after the designs of 2nd. Lieutenant David Lyle. Lyle began work on such designs in 1877 when he was handed down a request from the Secretary of War for the development of practical improvements in lifesaving apparatus. Lyle's main concern was in developing a tool that was not only robust and resistant to the harsh conditions of the coast, but was also straightforward and simple to set up and operate, which he saw as essential in any life-saving device. This particular cannon is in overall good condition with a dark patina to the carriage and only some minor dings and scratches. The cannon includes ramrod, five weighted shots (four of which have their own carrying frame), and a copy of the book "The Lifesaving Guns of David Lyle" by J.P. Barnett.
