East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. A lovely bronze floor lamp of substantial form adorned with high relief imagery of dragons, birds, floral motifs, and cranes, all supported by an openwork base and fit with an animal hide lampshade. Standing tall with a towering, columnar form, the lamp boasts an elegant, undulating silhouette of sloping walls and bulging orbs, one of which is openwork. The illuminating device was originally made with a separate lift-out kerosene or oil container with 3 controls and a wire support for the lampshade. Size with lampshade: 10" Diameter x 54" H (25.4 cm x 137.2 cm)

Condition
Includes mid-20th-century fitting for a modern electric light bulb and 20th-century lampshade. One-quarter inch drill hole in brass grid in order to fit modern electric cord. Otherwise, intact and excellent with nice remaining detail and rich patina. Comes apart into 3 sections for shipping; each about 13, 18, and 23 inches tall. Pull chains are marked "PA Duplex" and the body is unmarked.
