Large Tell Brak Marble Eye Idol, Near East, c. 3300-3000 B.C.
Bell-shaped body with domed top surmounted by two protruding circular eyes. Some earth patination.
Such idols are believed to have held symbolic or ritualistic significance in the religious practices of the ancient inhabitants of Tell Brak. Some theories suggest that they may have been used for protective purposes or as votive offerings.
