Description
This finely carved carnelian amulet represents a crocodile, an animal that was both feared and revered in ancient Egyptian culture. Its small size belies the significance it would have held as an object of protection and power, indicative of the craftsmanship of the Late Period of Egypt. Crocodiles were associated with the deity Sobek, and such amulets were believed to imbue the wearer with strength and command over the dangerous forces represented by these formidable creatures.
