Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1869 and 1944 CE. A lovely pair of ex-votos, both painted with images of people giving thanks for remedies from illnesses. Larger of the two, the first displays a husband and wife holding an infant as the kneel in prayer before the Holy Infant of Atocha (Santo Nino de Atocha). Beneath them is a Spanish inscription that translates to: "In the year 1860, Mrs. Di Anacleta Rodriguez found herself in danger of dying due to a bad birth, which did not promise signs of life, and in a trance, her husband Epimenio Manzano, imploring in prayer, prayed to the Holy Infant of Atocha, by whom she was saved from danger to her life and is entirely safe, and with great gratitude they put this altarpiece on the 6th of April of 1869." Alternatively, the more petite ex-voto depicts a lone male figure holding a candle before the robed figure of Brother Antonio Margil. Size of larger: 10" W x 7" H (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
In the right corner of the image is Spanish text translating to: "Narciso Silva: thanks Friar Antonio Margil de Jesus for the great favor he did in giving him his health, after an illness he had and in testimony of gratitude I offer you this present. San Miguel de Allende February 9th of 1944."

Condition
Chipping to lower corners of larger and both have some light bending, as well as minor abrasions, scratches, and small areas of chipping to paint. Otherwise, both are intact and very nice with good remaining imagery and light patina. Both have suspension holes for display. Old collection label on verso of larger
