Description
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A soft turquoise-glazed faience amulet in the form of a mummified ram in a recumbent pose atop an integral rectangular plinth. The creature raises its head to reveal a pair of curved horns and shaggy fur around its neck in front of the pierced suspension loop. Depictions of mummified rams were important as sacrificial offerings to the ram-headed deity Khnum, one of the creator gods who is aptly associated with fertility and virility.
