Francis Joseph Ist, born the 18 August 1830 at Vienna and dead the 21 November 1916 in the same city, is emperor of austria and apostolic king of hungary. Member of the Habsburg-Lorraine House, he rules overAustria and the Hungary of 2 December 1848 at 21 November 1916. Of 1st may 1850 at 24 August 1866 he also holds the function of President of the German Confederation. He holds the longest reign since ruler of austria and of Hungary, as well as the third longest reign of all countries in European history, after the King of France Louis XIV and the prince John II of Liechtenstein, almost 68 years old2. In December 1848, following the peoples spring and some Austrian Revolution, the emperor Ferdinand Ist abdicated the throne, as part of the minister-president's plan Felix zu Schwarzenberg aimed at ending the 1848 revolutions in Hungary. This allowed François-Joseph, nephew of Ferdinand, to reach the throne. Widely regarded as a reactionary, François Joseph spent his reign resisting constitutionalism in his fields.
The Austrian Empire was forced to cede its influence over Tuscany and most of its claims on the kingdom of lombardy-veneto at kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, following the second italian war of independence in 1859 and the third in 1866. Despite the defeat of the Empire after the Austro-Prussian War, Austria, with the Peace of Prague signed on August 23, 1866, ceded no territory to kingdom of prussia and settled the German question in favor of Prussia, thus preventing the unification of Germany under the aegis of the Habsburg house. The reign of François Joseph was disturbed by the nationalism in several of its territories. He concluded the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, granting greater autonomy to the Hungary and transforming the Austrian Empire into a double Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. He reigned peacefully for 45 years, but he personally suffered the tragedies of the execution of his brother, the emperor Maximilien Ist from Mexico in 1867, from the suicide of his only son and heir the prince Rodolphe, in 1889, of the assassination of his wife, theEmpress Elisabeth, in 1898 and the assassination of his nephew and presumptive heir, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in 1914.
After the Austro-Prussian War, Austria-Hungary turned to the Balkans, a hot spot of international tension due to conflicts of interest with theRussian Empire. The crisis in Bosnia is the result of the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by François Joseph in 1908, occupied by his troops since the Congress of Berlin (1878). On June 28, 1914, the assassination at Sarajevo of the archduke Franz Ferdinand, his nephew and presumptive heir, leads to the declaration of war on kingdom of serbia, ally of Russian Empire. This triggers the system of alliances which leads to the First World War. François Joseph died on November 21, 1916, after having reigned over Austria for almost 68 years. Her grand nephew Charles succeeded him.

All our artworks are packaged to a very high standard, using protective cellophane wallets, hardboard backing, and bubble wrap. Framed pictures are packed into custom made cartons. Some works on paper are shipped in extra-thick postage tubes when this is the safest method of transport.

Glass is usually removed from frames prior to shipping as despite our best effort, carriers manage to break the glass and often the broken glass damages the artwork.
