Description
This Sasanian chalcedony cylinder seal is a remarkable representation of the grandeur and sophistication of the Sasanian Empire. The seal features the intricately carved figures of Medes, who played a significant role in the Near Eastern politics of the era as precursors to the Persian Empire. The Medes are portrayed in fine detail, which, along with the seal's pillar-like form, suggests it may have been used by someone of considerable importance. Such seals were used to authenticate documents and denote ownership, and the craftsmanship of this piece indicates it was the work of a master artisan. The use of chalcedony, a material prized for its beauty and durability, further signifies the high status of this object. This seal not only served a practical function but also stood as a symbol of power and prestige.
