Description
This New Kingdom faience scarab is a quintessential artifact of ancient Egyptian religious and daily life. Its small form, 2 cm in length, belies the profound cultural and spiritual significance it held. The underside of the scarab showcases meticulously carved hieroglyphs, often personalized to bear the name or titles of its owner. These symbols, alongside the distinctive blue-green glaze, were emblematic of regeneration and the sun's daily renewal, mirroring the scarab beetle's mythological role as a protector and guide for the sun god Ra. Such objects served multiple purposes: as personal seals, amulets for protection, and as tokens to ensure safe passage through the afterlife. The artisanship speaks of an era where miniaturization and detail were held in high esteem.
