Item Details
Description
Lalla Rookh, An Oriental Romance, Thomas Moore 1888. This is another copy of "Lalla Rookh, An Oriental Romance", written by Thomas Moore and published in Boston by Estes and Lauriat in 1888. The book is a beautiful copy printed at the Cambridge Press by John Wilson, and dated 1884 on the copyright page, in a fine binding by Root. The book has five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments with gilt lettering on the and "1888" on the spine, grained morocco boards with gilt-fillet borders on the covers, marbled endpapers with wide gilt dentelles and "Bound By Root & Son" at the bottom of the front paste-down, the first blank endpaper is stamped "Charles E. Lauriat" in small letters at the top, the half-title, then pretty much the same format as the previous book - a large engraved frontispiece of Lalla Rookh followed by a tissue guard and the title page, the copyright page, an illustrated page of Contents, a four-page list of Illustrations and the illustrators, a ten-page Introduction with Illustrations, 274 pages of text and an emblem on the following leaf, and all the edges are gilt. The story is the same - an Oriental romance by Irish poet Thomas Moore, first published in 1817, the fictional daughter of a Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, a real emperor who ruled from 1658 until his death in 1707, there are four poems with a connecting tale in prose, and Lalla Rookh is an endearment used in Persian poetry.Moore's bio is still the same too - he was an Irish writer, poet, and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies set to verse in the English language, and in England he was recognized as a squib writer for the Whigs and in Ireland he was considered a Catholic patriot. (A squib writer writes a very short article and might outline a problem, but doesn't suggest a solution, or comes up with just a short theoretical argument. Nuff said.)The book measures 11 x 7 1/2 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and illustrations, a couple of faint brown spots in the margins on the frontispiece and the title page, some offset here and there, and the pages and gilt are actually very clean and bright. There's a shadow from a ribbon marker on page 3 (the marker is still there), light rubbing on the edges of the spine and at the tips, and a tad at the heel, and thin scratches on the back cover, and still a very attractive copy for yourself or a gift for someone you love ? let the Oriental Romance go on. #81 #1678
