Item Details
Description
The Pennsylvania Pilgrim, John Greenleaf Whittier 1872. This poetry book by John Greenleaf Whittier is titled "The Pennsylvania Pilgrim, And Other Poems", published ink Boston by James R. Osgood in 1872, and it is a first edition with matching dates on the title and copyright pages. The book has the original green cloth, with gilt lettering and the monogram of Osgood and Company at the foot of the spine, an ornate gilt title and gilt shamrock design on the front cover, bevelled edges, brown endpapers, a beautifully illustrated frontis with a tissue guard, a vignette title page dated 1872, the copyright page is dated 1872, which makes this a first edition (the dates on the title page and copyright page match), a Contents page, a history of Francis Daniel Pastorius, a poem about Pastorius from the Germantown Record, a Prelude to the Pennsylvania Pilgrim, and the text runs to page 129, as called for. The monogram of J. R. Osgood is at the foot of the spine, which makes this binding A and a first edition in the first state, according to BAL. See BAL 21904. There are wood engraved plates and the type on page 114 is unbroken as well. The introductory essay is a study of the life and times of the Pennsylvania colonist, Francis Daniel Pastorius, a young lawyer from Germany who was an agent for the Frankfort Land Company. He arrived in Pennsylvania in 1683 accompanied by friends, all German immigrants. In 1688, he drew up a "memorial" against slaveholding with his Germantown friends, and at the yearly Friends Meeting, they held the first protest against Negro slavery made by a religious body, says Whittier, and the Pennsylvania Pilgrim is followed by twelve other poems. The book is 8vo. and measures 7 1/8 x 4 7/8 in. wide, the binding is tight and the pages and text are clean, with bumps at the crown and wear at the heel of the spine, light rubbing at the tips and along the edges in a couple of spots, and there are blemishes on the back cover. Still an attractive book by Whittier in the first state. #24 #7040
