Message From The President 34th Congress 1855
Message From The President of the United States, to the Two Houses of Congress, at the Commencement of the First Session of the Thirty-Fourth Congress. Part 1
In his message to Congress, President Franklin Pierce discussed a number of issues, including the need for internal improvements, the settlement of the Kansas-Nebraska Territory, and the growing sectional tensions over slavery.
On the issue of internal improvements, Pierce called for Congress to invest in roads, canals, and railroads. He argued that these investments would help to promote economic growth and national unity.
On the issue of Kansas-Nebraska, Pierce urged Congress to allow the people of the territory to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery. He argued that this was the best way to resolve the controversy over slavery in the territory.
On the issue of slavery, Pierce expressed his hope that the issue could be resolved peacefully. He called for both sides to be willing to compromise.
Pierce's message to Congress was met with mixed reactions. Some praised his call for internal improvements and his support for popular sovereignty in Kansas-Nebraska. Others criticized his stance on slavery and his efforts to avoid a sectional crisis.
Despite the mixed reactions, Pierce's message to Congress set the tone for the Thirty-fourth Congress. The Congress would be dominated by the issue of slavery, and Pierce's message would provide the framework for the debate.
