Description
Early 19th century whaling log with accompanying group of photos, dag's, cabinet cards, genealogy and miscellaneous ephemera from this New Bedford family. Log book has daily accounts of the ship Stephania of New Bedford, MA from Oct. 16 1835 to May 18th 1837. It includes several pages with hand drawn vignettes of whales and ships in black ink. One page mentions the death of 2 men while hunting whales, one drowning. Total of 22 full pages with daily entries, the back of the book includes inventory listings up to 1852. The ship was captained by Steven H. Hathaway and was later replaced by Capt. George Heath and was built in 1819 in NYC and had a remarkable record of 15 voyages from 1828-1864. One of the seamen mentioned in the log was Gillira Kendrick (1812-1893), whose cabinet cards are included, one card states that he was at sea starting at age 15 to age 37, then decided to go west to search for gold. Hardcover book is 13 x 8 inches, pages are toned with some foxing and some have folds/small tears.
