Large Tiffany & Co. sterling silver urn-form yachting trophy with engraved ship and coat-of-arms with Latin motto DISCE PATI (Learn to Suffer) , the two handles have embossed heads of the god Neptune or Poseidon. The base has other engraved and chased designs. Signed Tiffany & Co 2026, Quality 925/1000, 3218, 550 Broadway with M director mark. Underside also engraved TO DAVID DUNCAN FROM HIS GUESTS OF RACE WEEK AUGUST 1868 with 12 names (probably members of the NY Yacht Club in NY & Newport RI), including several notable high society figures including WW SHERMAN, SE PEABODY, WG SALTONSTALL, P. SCHYULER, etc. Size: 13.5 in high x 16 wide - bowl is 11.25 in diameter. VG condition with minor solder repair to joint of one handle, weighs 72.9 ozt. (Note: William Gurdon Saltonstall 1831 ? 1889 was an American naval officer from Salem MA during the U.S. Civil War and a prominent merchant; Samuel Endicott Peabody 1825 ? 1909 was an American merchant and banker from Salem MA who was a partner in the London banking firm of J.S. Morgan & Co; William Watts Sherman 1842 ? 1912 was a New York City businessman and the treasurer of the Newport Casino. Philip Schuyler was the son of George Lee Schuyler, a founding member of the NY Yacht Club in 1844 (2nd oldest in No. America). George helped create the syndicate that built and raced the great schooner-yacht 'America' and who played a key role in the founding of the America's Cup regatta)
