Description
For your consideration is this 1908 photogravure on vellum paper of an Edward Curtis photograph titled, "Contents of Arikara Tribal Medicine Car". The piece has been printed on the correct Japanese Vellum (a calfskin or goat skin) paper. Edward S. Curtis favored three types of handmade papers for his photogravures: Japanese Vellum, Dutch "Van Gelder" and Japanese Tissue (also known as Indian Proof Paper). This piece is marked on the front reading, "From Copyright Photograph 1908 by E. S. Curtis / Contents of Arikara Tribal Medicine Bundle". The photo shows the contents of what would have been in the Arikara tribes medicine bag, including food, herbal medicine, furs and more. The photogravure has been placed on a large piece of parchment paper, set on foam board and plastic wrap to preserve its condition. The visible art measures 5 1/4" L x 8 3/8" W. The entire piece measures 11 3/8" L x 13 1/2" W.
