Item Details
Description
Waugh (Evelyn) Brideshead Revisited, first American edition, signed presentation inscription from the author "For Susan Stirling with love from Evelyn Waugh, June 1947" to endpaper, additionally signed on title, original cloth, slight shelf-lean, light toning to spine, some fraying to spine ends, some marking to covers, 8vo, Boston, 1946.*** A good association copy, inscribed to the wife of Bill Stirling (1911-83). Following his brother David's capture, Bill Stirling took over command of the Special Air Service; Waugh was accepted into the battalion with the responsibility of presenting the case for greater funding and expansion of the unit. Throughout this period Waugh was working on Brideshead Revisited, an effort that took up much of his attentions, as remarked on by Stirling himself: "It was difficult if one was doing a general reorganisation of things to have to deal with Evelyn as well, and particularly when he felt he ought to be writing a book." (Selina Hastings, Evelyn Waugh. A Biography), p.457.
