Cole notes in the book who coloured which plate, and gives further information on the making of the images (names of artist and engraver), and that John S. Mill's sister Harriet was the author of the section devoted to Durer. Ruari McLean noted that 'Cole was a great salesman, and gave the Home Treasury [series, of which this one] the most distinguished design treatment ever given to children's books', including the fine typography undertaken by Charles Whittingham.
