Description
A beautiful Givenchy haute couture dress from 1956, owned by legendary screen actress Gloria Swanson.
The French design features a fitted bodice with a bateau neckline, a full A-line skirt, and elbow-length sleeves, featuring a pinafore-style accent. This accent is tightly gathered under the bust and fastened to the dress with fabric-covered buttons. The accent showcases Givenchy’s fondness for gored panels, which tightens and then goes into a dramatic flair towards the hem.
Givenchy matured as a couturier because of his friendship with couture master Cristobal Balenciaga. Both designers in 1957 were famous for banning press from their shows, their clients were allowed to preview and purchase the latest collection with the fashions being marketed a month after their showing.
