Description
Western Europe, Victorian era, ca. late 19th CE. A beautiful cast iron parade shield with a central boss terminating in a conical spike, and relief scenes from the life of Julius Caesar, sharply rendered in the matte black surface. This is after an older 16th century shield believed to be by Benvenuto Cellini (Italian, Florence 1500-1571) and known as the Cellini shield, however the attribution to Cellini has been disputed and Eliseus Libaerts (Antwerp 16th century) is the probably the original artist. The shield's design garnered attention in the 19th century with medalists making electrotype copies, such as this example. The verso of this is marked "2837." Size: 22" Diameter (55.9 cm)
