(1811-1874) American senator and a strident abolitionist, his vitriolic attacks on slavery on the Senate floor resulted in a vicious beating by South Carolina Rep. Andrew P. Butler. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Boston, Nov. 29, 1852, an unnamed colonel, in part: ‘…I learn that my landlord has let my rooms, although I had promised him $15 a month…His excuse is that he heard I had hired a furnished [one]. Of this I had no purpose; for I considered my old rooms as engaged to me for the season. I have written to-day to my friend Mr. Eames [?]…asking his intervention…’.
