Item Details
Description
(1808 – 1899) Confederate naval commander who left for Europe to purchase vessels. He bought the Confederacy’s last ironclad, the CSS Stonewall, but by the time it arrived in the South, the war had ended. A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Dolphin [?], Jan. 16, 1850, to Commodore David Geisinger. The letter is difficult to read but appears to discuss a Mr. Frost whom Page does not believe worthy of service as a 2nd or 3rd mate. Page also writes of paying Geisinger a visit. Noticeable show-through due to thin paper, and some foxing throughout. The signature is intact and clear. WITh: an A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Dolphin [?], [n.d.], again to Geisinger, stating he is too unwell to see him. Spotting throughout, but again the signature remains unaffected. Two pieces.
