(1826-1908) Union major general, served at Vicksburg as well as in the Shenandoah and Red River Campaigns. T.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Lawrenceburg, IN, Apr. 11, 1891, on lined letterhead to Genl. Henry M. Cist, no doubt in reference to Cist’s research. In part: ‘…John M. Orr first entered the service as a Captain of Co ‘E’ 16th Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry…reentered the service as a Captain of the Co ‘A’ 16th Regiment of Indiana Mounted Infantry…Committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at Connersville, Indiana in 1865, supposed cause – Domestic Trouble…’. Cist (1839-1902) was a Union brevet Brigadier General as well, best known for his book ‘The Army of the Cumberland.’ Central fold, otherwise fine.
