Description
(1821-1891) Union Brevet Brigadier General, fought at Bull Run, captured Fort Pillow, and led assaults on Vicksburg. YANKEES STEAL THEIR OWN HORSES AND MULES War-date manuscript L.S. 2pp. 4to., ‘Camp Near Memphis’, Feb. 5, 1863, to Maj. Genl. Charles S. Hamilton, in part: ‘…A large number of horses and mules have recently been stolen from this Division…and probably taken to Memphis for sale…many of them have been traced thus far…My own private horse is included in the number which have been run off. Doubtless there exists a regular horse-thieving organization, in which our Soldiers are engaged, and no effort should be spared to break it up. Permit me to suggest issuing the following order: ‘Hereafter no officer, Soldier or Citizen shall sell within the limits of this Dist…any horse or mule without a permit…Any violation of this order will expose the parties thereto to the severest punishment that can be inflicted by a Military commission…’. Expertly tipped to another sheet, fine condition.
