Description
(1804-1871) Union brevet brigadier general, colonel of the 91st Philadelphia Infantry which fought in 21 battles. Led in the Richmond Campaign, Battle of Deep Bottom and Battle of Poplar Springs. A pair of war-date letters to his daughter, the first a fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., ‘In the Field [near Five Forks, VA’, Apr. 1, 1865, concerning the Union’s triumph in the Battle of Five Forks. In part: ‘…I am safe at the mercy of God. We have had hard fighting today, took a battery, whipped the Rebels badly. It was a hard contest. 5th Corps only in the fight and Sheridan’s Cavalry. It is a glorious victory. Our loss is not many. This [is] the 5th day fighting...I feel thankful to God for his mercy to our Army and our glorious cause…Affectionately your father E. M. Gregory’. WITH: an A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., ‘In the Field Hd Qr’, Apr. 3, 1865, describing the collapse of Lee’s army after the battle: ‘…Our battle on the 1st was a good hard one…Yesterday had but little loss, trifling. We have taken many prisoners, probably up to this time 8 or 9,000. The enemy are flying before us. Everything favorable…’. Light offsetting, both in pencil, very good. Two pieces.
