Item Details
Description
Simple straw hat in a conical shape, 17 in. dia., with a pink ribbon for a chinstrap, ca. 1960s. This style of hat is known by many names, including: Non La, Non Toi, Non Gao, Non Dang, and Non Truc, and primarily used for protection from the sun and rain but can also be dipped in water to act as a cooling device. There are several English terms for these hats as well, such as sedge hat, rice hat, paddy hat, bamboo hat, and the offensive term ‘coolie hat'. This particular example bears a tag indicating it was brought from Vietnam to the U.S. by Sergeant Brock D. Abraham of the Chaplain's Office, and that it had passed inspection. Very light wear, overall, very good.
