Seth Thomas marbleized celluloid ADAMANTINE over wood antique mantle clock, c. 1880 ,wind up clock WITH KEY, IN WORKING CONDITION. Copper patina lion head rings flank sides of clock with 4 corner claw feet. neoclassical columns decorate the front. Brass Patina metal clock door opens. Taupe, brown, and orange celluloid veneer is in very good condition. Small corner Nick to veneer. See picture. Clock is Manufacture in the USA. Instruction are on back on a paper ( with date of 1880)., This clock was patented Sept 7, 1880 by Seth Thomas. Measures 17.5 in. Long, 7 in. Deep, 11 in. Ht. The black enamel finishes were known Adamantine black mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble, and was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City with a U.S. Patent dated September 7, 1880. Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the Adamantine veneer in 1881.Property of Greenwich Connecticut estate. Owners had relocated from their life in Vienna , Austria, bringing a fine collection of period European furnishings, antiques and decorative objects. this piece is part of the larger collection.
