Egypt, Coptic culture, 5th to 8th century CE. A hand-carved ungulate or bovine bone idol of an abstract head and a slender pin form figural head. The broader piece is a flattened panel shape, perhaps a talisman or amulet. The pin may have been for hair, the elaborate headdress and clothing of the figure finial possibly emulating royalty or religious authority. Size of pin: 4.5" L x 0.45" W (11.4 cm x 1.1 cm)
Provenance: private Ojai, California, USA collection, by inheritance, collected before 2000
