Hand-carved dowry, or hope, chest. These items were used in almost every culture for unmarried to store items such as linens, clothing, silverware, dishes, and family heirlooms in anticipation of married life. This particular chest was made in India and features ornate carvings of elephants, peacocks, and horses; also of note are the original iron hinges and latch. This piece is structurally in good condition and, while exhibiting years of use, retains much of the original character.
