West Africa, Nigeria or Cameroon, ca. early 20th century CE. A pair of forged-iron currency pieces in the form of hoe blades. Each elongated blade features a sturdy tang on one end and a sharp edge on the opposite end. Hoe money pieces were typically used as a component in bridal dowry payments as a symbol of all that the bride will bring to their marriage. Size of largest: 16.5" L x 3.25" W (41.9 cm x 8.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995

Both pieces with minor abrasions, expected oxidation, and some chipping along blade edge, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
