Notes:
Leo Meiersdorff, born in Germany in 1934, studied both music and art at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, eventually becoming a master student of Austrian expressionist Oskar Kokoschka. In Berlin he led a jazz combo and won a design competition for a poster promoting Jazz at the Philharmonic in 1957. His love of jazz led him to visit America, and by 1966, he was a permanent resident. Meiersdorff's paintings began to focus on the people he met in America, living and working in New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans, where he spent 10 years capturing the city's cultural scene. He made a name for himself in his community of musicians, who often commissioned him to produce album covers or backgrounds for television specials.
