Description
An expressive abstract modern lithograph on arches archival paper titled "Lithosphere --; La Digitale" by Belgian artist Pierre Alechinsky. Hand signed in pencil bottom left with an annotation of 143/300 on the bottom right. Published in 1969. A classic example of the artist's figurative motifs in a surreal abstract depiction. From a private collection. Dimensions: 25.75"h x 19.5"w x 1.5"d (framed). In very good condition. Pierre Alechinsky (1927- ) was one of the founders and most active members of the CoBrA group, along with other prominent artists such as Christian Dotremont, Karel Appel, Constant, Jan Nieuwenhuys and Asger Jorn. CoBrA, was a European avant-garde art group active from 1948 to 1951. The name was coined in 1948 by Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br), Amsterdam (A). Alechinsky participated both with the COBRA exhibitions and went to Paris to study engraving at Atelier 17 under the guidance of Stanley William Hayter in 1951. His works are held in the collections of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Tate, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, Texas, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Fisogni Museum in Tradate, Italy. The main-belt asteroid 14832 Alechinsky was named in his honour in October 2000.
